Fallout 3 Ending: The Letdowns Start to Pile Up

Warning: Fallout 3 spoilers ahead. Do not read this if you don't want to know how it ends.
I've been urging Jack to finish Fallout 3 on the heels of Fable 2. All I got were excuses: I have two physics exams and a ton of engineering homework. Priorities? My blog post or his education? Not to worry, exams went fine and now we're able to report on Fallout 3.
In a word: disappointment. After many complex battles with indescribable violence (much more violent than Fable 2), he faced the final boss. This time, he let him talk, thanks to the comment from one of our readers. Colonel Autumn said, "I killed your father and now I'll kill you." Jack was ready, finger on the left bumper, entered VATS and shot. One plasma charge to the head. Dead. Like Fable 2, no exchange of lethal ammo, no mythical transformations, and no surprise resurrections.
One may be a fluke, two is a pattern. Touted as having 200 different endings, in actuality there are approximately 200 sequences, merely a summary narrative of everything you did throughout the game. And in this case, inaccurate. For the record, he did not kill anyone in Rivet City.
What's up with games now? In earlier games series such as Zelda and Final Fantasy, you fight a worthy adversary at the end. We want a payoff. Yes, he played for days, he's invested. We want a final grandstand effort, an opportunity to show off hard won battle skills. And he didn't even get to bring back a dog.
We're covering all the great deals on gaming consoles. We know what gamers want: Check out The Gifted Gamer Hotlist, it won't disappoint.
