EA Combines BioWare and Mythic into New RPG/MMO Group
Despite publishing games from some of our favorite developers, EA has a track record of meddling too much with their studios. Continuing their tradition, EA announced they will be combining BioWare and Mythic, two of our favorites, into one development group. This move has us worried. We're not particularly worried about BioWare or Mythic messing up, we're just worried that the mojo will get muddied in the consolidation. And that might sound a little unreasonable considering that there won't be a whole lot of administrative changes. Ray Muzyka, co-founder and General Manager of BioWare, will lead the team; Greg Zeschuk, BioWare's other co-founder, will act as Group Creative Officer for the new RPG/MMO studio group. The biggest change is that Rob Denton will replace Mark Jacobs as General Manager of Mythic (Jacobs is leaving).
But when the status quo is disrupted and leadership changes, even ever so slightly, it can ruin the creative flow. Suddenly goals and expectations change, which can really hurt good projects. And BioWare has a lot to lose. Their three upcoming projects, Mass Effect 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Dragon Age, are all expected to be excellent. We're anticipating big things from them too. If any new pressure or change of focus gets passed down from EA as a result of this reorganization, it could severely impact these games. Little changes have big consequences over the long term.
Let's just hope this is all needless worrying and BioWare and Mythic continue on as if nothing has changed.
Seriously, EA, don't mess this up.
